8 Signs Your Business Needs a Website Redesign

Your business has grown, but has your website kept up? These are the signs we see most often when a site is quietly turning customers away.

Key Takeaways

  • If your site is hard to use on a phone, it's hurting you with customers and with Google.
  • A site you can't update yourself goes stale, and stale sites lose trust.
  • Few leads, high bounce rates, and no search rankings are signs the site isn't doing its job.
  • If your business has changed (new services, new areas, a new brand), your site should too.
  • A redesign done right keeps your existing search rankings with proper redirects.

Most business owners don't wake up one day and decide they need a new website. It's more of a slow realization: a customer mentions the site is hard to use, a competitor launches something sharp, or you notice you haven't gotten a form submission in months.

A website usually has a useful life of a few years before technology, design expectations, and your business itself move past it. Here are eight signs yours has reached that point.

1. It's frustrating to use on a phone

Pull up your site on your phone right now. Is the text tiny? Do you have to pinch and zoom? Are buttons too close together to tap? Does the menu work?

Most of your visitors are on phones, and Google evaluates the mobile version of your site first. A site that only works well on desktop is losing customers and rankings at the same time.

2. It's slow

If your homepage takes more than a few seconds to load on mobile, visitors leave before they see anything. Run it through Google PageSpeed Insights. A low mobile score on an older site is often a sign the platform itself is the bottleneck. More on that in Why Is My Website So Slow?

3. You can't update it yourself

If changing your hours, swapping a photo, or adding a new service means emailing a developer and waiting a week (or you've lost contact with whoever built it), your site will fall behind. Outdated prices, old staff photos, and a 2021 copyright year tell visitors nobody is paying attention.

4. It doesn't bring in leads

Your website's job is to turn visitors into calls, form submissions, and bookings. If you're getting traffic but no inquiries, something is off: unclear messaging, buried contact info, a broken form, or no reason to act now. If you're not getting traffic at all, that's a different problem (see next).

5. You don't show up on Google

Search for your main service plus your city, like "roofing Peoria" or "family dentist Gilbert." If you're nowhere on the first page, your site is probably missing the basics: dedicated service pages, city pages, a clear headline, structured data, and speed. Those are hard to bolt onto an old site and much easier to build in from the start.

6. It doesn't look like your business anymore

Maybe you've added services, expanded into new parts of the Valley, rebranded, or moved up-market. If your website still describes the business you were five years ago, it's sending the wrong customers the wrong message.

7. It looks like everyone else's

If your site uses the same template as half your competitors, customers can't tell you apart. A custom design built around your brand helps you look like the established, trustworthy choice. We compared these routes in Web Design vs. Website Builders.

8. It has security warnings or keeps breaking

"Not secure" in the browser bar, plugins that haven't been updated in years, or a site that has been hacked before are all red flags. Visitors notice, and so do browsers and Google. If you're stuck in a cycle of plugin updates and fixes, you may not need WordPress at all.

Refresh or full redesign?

Not every site needs to start from scratch.

  • A refresh makes sense when the structure and platform are solid, and you mainly need updated content, photos, and a few design tweaks.
  • A redesign makes sense when the site is slow, hard to update, not mobile-friendly, or built on a platform that's fighting you.

If you checked three or more signs above, a redesign usually pays off faster than another round of patches.

Don't lose your rankings in a redesign

The biggest risk in a redesign isn't the design. It's losing the search rankings your old site earned. A careful redesign keeps the URLs that already rank, or sets up 301 redirects from old addresses to new ones, so Google and your customers land in the right place.

We handle that as part of every migration for businesses in North Phoenix, Peoria, Gilbert, and across the Valley. Wondering if your site needs a refresh or a rebuild? Send it to us and we'll give you an honest answer.
